Daniel Ricciardo has been stripped of his second place finish in Sunday afternoon’s Australian Grand Prix, with his Red Bull machine guilty of exceeding the maximum allowed fuel flow rate per hour.
The Australian had finished second on his first ever race for the Milton Keynes-based outfit, marking his maiden podium finish in the top echelon.
But the FIA revealed after the race that his car had consistently surpassed the 100kg/h fuel flow limit, a breach of the regulations.
Red Bull immediately noted its intention to appeal the decision.
“Following the decision of the FIA that Infiniti Red Bull Racing is in breach of Article 3.2 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations and Article 5.1.4 of the FIA Formula One Technical Regulations with Car 3, the team has notified the FIA of its intention to appeal with immediate effect,” read a statement issued by the team.
“Inconsistencies with the FIA fuel flow meter have been prevalent all weekend up and down the pit lane. The Team and Renault are confident the fuel supplied to the engine is in full compliance with the regulations.”
Ricciardo’s penalty promotes Kevin Magnussen to second position, with team-mate Jenson Button now joining him on the rostrum, while Sergio Pérez moves up to 10th and gives Force India a double points finish.
